i don’t know if it is ignorance or he knows the history of Christian defenses of slavery and chooses to ignore them. but the defense was done based on an historical and literal interpretation of Gen, in particular the Hametic verses.

While the underlying mechanism that accounts for the link between diabetes and risk of cognitive decline is not completely understood, Yaffe said, it may be related to a human protein known as insulin degrading enzyme, which plays an important role in regulating insulin, the key hormone linked to diabetes. This same enzyme also degrades a protein in the brain known as beta-amyloid, a brain protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease

^^^quote:”Perhaps it is the fervent individualism of American Christianity which makes free market capitalism seem like a Divine mandate. Because evangelicals assert that you alone are responsible for your eternal salvation, it makes sense that the individual is also responsible for his or her economic salvation without government assistance, especially if God is the only assistance you really need.

Today, economic conservatism is inextricably linked to theology. Americans who believe in an Authoritative God simply do not make the same distinction between economic and religious spheres that researchers routinely do. Therefore, it is not enough for a Republican candidate to define himself or herself as mainly a “fiscal conservative” or a “person of faith” to be embraced by believers in the new religious-economic idealism. If he or she is to appeal to the religious-economic idealists, both these things must be claimed in equal measure.”

betsey dean

Posted by richard on 19th June 2012

 on alma’s tree, they are her 3rd ggparent’s. (ruth m.<lizzie c.<asaph c.<betsey c.)

Betsey Dean

Birth 1779 in Buckfield, Oxford, Maine, United States

wife of

Asaph Churchill

Your 3rd great grandfather

Birth 1775 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States

Death in Paris, Oxford, Maine, United States

when did they die? how do we know her maiden name? can we find her parents?

first piece of data, 1860 census:

Name: Betsey Churchill
Age in 1860: 81
Birth Year: abt 1779
Birthplace: Massachusetts
Home in 1860: Highgate, Franklin, Vermont
Gender: Female
Post Office: Highgate
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
Wid sarah Edson 53
Betsey Churchill 81
Cynthia Cooper 63

there are conflicting 1860 census, this one and another one that puts her in plymouth mass, in both 1860 &1870.

—it turns out there are 2 betsey churchills that i have conflated and confused during my first pass through the tree building.

distinguish them by birth year: #2 born 1776/7 & #1 born 1779, #1 is correct, #2 is in plymouth Mass. joining them with “CONFUSED” until the pieces are properly separated on alma’s tree.

look at this one first, who are the 2 other ladies?

1850 census data:

Name: Sarah Edson
Age: 44
Birth Year: abt 1806
Birthplace: Vermont
Home in 1850: Highgate, Franklin, Vermont
Gender: Female
Family Number: 357
Household Members:
Name Age
Cyntha Cooper 52
Sarah Edson 44

and in 1870

Name: Sarah Edson
Age in 1870: 65
Birth Year: abt 1805
Birthplace: Vermont
Home in 1870: Highgate, Franklin, Vermont
Race: White
Gender: Female
Post Office: Sheldon
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
Cynthia Cooper 72
Sarah Edson 65

finally i find cynthia cooper in 1880

Name: Cynthia Cooper
Age: 83
Birth Year: abt 1797
Birthplace: Vermont
Home in 1880: Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relation to Head of House: Mother
Marital Status: Widowed
Father’s Birthplace: Vermont
Mother’s Birthplace: Vermont
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: At Home
Household Members:
Name Age
John W. F. Cooper 50
Sarah M. Cooper 37
Charles H. Cooper 5
Cynthia Cooper 83

john w.f. cooper is her son. his dates lead me to

the Cooper family tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=22334189&pid=1219304556 owner: kareng4532

where i find her maiden name is:

Cynthia edson, her husband is William F Cooper (1795-).

nice, she might be related to sarah edson with whom she shares at least 30 years in the same house.

so i contact kareng4532 to see what she knows about these 3 ladies. there is no evidence but the 1880 census on her tree, nor does she have a relationship between any of the women.

meanwhile, a death certificate pops up for cynthia edson.

Name: Cynthia Cooper
[Cynthia Edson]
Gender: Female
Birth Date: abt 1798
Birth Place: Massachusetts
Death Date: 12 Jan 1885
Death Place: Salem, New Hampshire
Death Age: 87
Race: White
Marital Status: Widowed
Father Name: Elijah Edson
Mother Name: Sarah Atkinson
Clerk Locality: Salem, New Hampshire
Event Type: Death
FHL Film Number: 1001069

issues: i’ve been reading wid=widow in 1860 on sarah edson’s name, if so than edson is her married name, if not then she is named for her mother and is cynthia’s sister-this seems more likely. note: what is this word? have i ever seen description=old lady before?

solutions: asaph churchill must have died before 1860, betsey dean churchill before 1870(i’ve not found her elsewhere), & sarah edson before 1880.

continuing work: what, if any, is edson-betsey dean churchill’s relationship?

kh and fallible men

Posted by richard on 17th June 2012

one of the things that bothers me the most about ken ham & aig/yec is this mantra:

quote: This error is becoming all too common among believers; interpreting Scripture in the light of evolutionary ideas elevates fallible man’s ideas above God’s Word.

from: http://blogs.answersingenesis.org/blogs/ken-ham/2012/06/16/the-creation-answer-book-more-questions-than-answers/

when kh opens his mouth to speak and says “genesis 1:1″ he is speaking not God’s word but fallible man’s ideas, before he even reads the text itself.

genesis is the name given to the hebrew scroll known by it’s first word- berishit.

Genesis is the Latin Vulgate title for it,  meaning the book-liber of beginnings, a name given by Jerome not God,

now chapter and verse are much later, very human invention, about the time of gutenburg and printing.

but this is really just a lead in to the problem of the canon.

not only are the names of the books in your English Bible not God’s words, nor are the chapter/verses numbers, neither is the table of contents itself. the problem stems from our lack of understanding about the history of this book-The Bible we so often hold as a unit.

the canon exists in the world of fallible men, in church history, in particular the great events of the 4thC and 16thC. when KH hands his English-book, a Bible to Hugh Ross during this recent debate, he is handing him a human document, not this Quran-type eternal with Allah* ideal, but something very much anchored in history. even the form, now a book, then a collection of scrolls has changed. With new names, with a table of contents and chapter/verse that makes getting places easy is not what KH proposes, something utter above human history as if God spoke the words from heaven via divine dictation. and don’t even get me going on the separation of a text from the reader by a layer of interpretation. or on the topic of translation…..

anyhow, next time you talk to kh, ask him where in the Word of God “Gen 1:1″ really exists, if both the table of contents, the names of the books and numbering system are the product of fallible human invention. so ask him, “were you there?” when they named the books of the Bible, or when church councils decided what was in and what was out, or when they numbered the verses for convenience of printing. ask him if this is in the realm of “operational” science and history where fallible men operate to get their way or in his Word of God separated from the world of us**.
(you can leave out the part about fallible people interpreting it, i don’t think he’ll get that part, he doesn’t seem to have a distinction between the words on the paper and the thoughts in his head put there during the act of reading)

notes:

*as Christians we tend to align the Bible with the Quran in each system, but the Quran in Islam is much more like Jesus than the Bible. it is co existent with Allah from the beginning, it has a personality often described by the sufis as feminine. it bridges the utter transcendent Allah to the earthly realms in its form of Arabic, essentially taking on humanity. it seems to me than the nature of the Quran recapitulates some of the 4thC Christological debates.

genetic genealogy study

Posted by richard on 13th June 2012

thank you very much for the link:

rule #1:(which i knew)

The probability that a segment is will be transmitted at all is one-half per generation.

rule #2:

The probability that a segment, if transmitted, will not be broken up by recombination is 1 minus the probability of recombination, (1 – P(rec))^n

rule #3:

In general, the number of cousins of a specific degree who should be expected to share a segment is given by 2(((1-P(rec))/2)^(2n+2)) x N where N is the number of relatives of that degree.

the bottom line is:

“Thus, if you have many more distant cousins, as would be expected if your ancestors had large families, then someone who shares a single IBD segment is more likely to be a distant cousin, because you have so many more distant cousins. The point where the increase in the number of cousins outweighs the loss of shared segments is five children per family.”

the last paragraph is:

“In summary, it is impossible to know the relationship one has to relatives who are discovered by virtue of their sharing a single autosomal segment of DNA. The “predicted relationship” is uncertain, and even the range is hard to be sure of. The extensive information provided by 23andMe is a very useful tool for genealogy, but it cannot tell you about relatives with whom you do not share any genetic material by descent. On the other hand, relatives with whom you do share genetic material by descent can be quite distant.”

i sure wish i’d found this earlier…..thanks again

only about 12% of your genealogical tree is in your genetic tree.

the mason living next door

Posted by richard on 12th June 2012

i am actively writing this… still 7 jul 2012, now 1 nov 2012,  now 2 feb 2013 any questions would be a big help.

i’m having a difficult time giving away a $99 23&me dna test or a $139 ancestry one. i don’t know why people turn down dna testing, it’s just way too cool.

i’m not used to writing for other people, this will be for the 2 gentlemen/people(i’m not finding paternal dna males, unfortunately) i need to get dna data from to show our potential relationship. neither the known or unknown sample as been obtained!!

major idea: john joseph mason is probably kin to my masons. but i have dna connections to co. galway kelly’s. this makes me wonder is ella kelly is not a distant cousin to jjm, or maybe to catherine, wife of richard of the immigrant generation.

LOOKING FOR A MASON&KELLY RELATIONSHIP

In the 1920 census my 2nd great grand uncle Richard E. Mason, b. 1852 in Philadephia, is living at 2110 57th st . I like researching Richard E. because he is a nice stable guy, appearing in all the census from 1860  to 1920, always living in Philadelphia within a few miles of where he was born. Besides i think my dad was named after him and i’m a junior. So researching him is like chasing myself.

Richard is line 7, john joseph is line 21.

Well anyhow, next door at 2114 is John Joseph Mason, b 1874 in Ireland with his wife Ella Ellen J Kelly Birth 20 Dec 1876 in Cloonfush, Tuam, Galway, Ireland. Now i found a very active genealogist(&nice)-cloonfushpa who has Ella J.K.’s family back to this little town in Galway co, Tuam. What i don’t have -is- any idea of it what relationship, if any, Richard and John Joseph have.

another important census is 1880, when maggie(margaret MNU mason)-richard’s mother, my 2nd ggmom is living with them, she dies later this year.

followup, try to find brother- S/P Mason- who met john joseph at phila docks. use directories. thus far unsuccessful, too many masons. JJ emigrates from northern ireland according to later census. i do not know if he is protestant or catholic.

what i’m doing is assuming the masons and kellys are related back in ireland. that JJ is a cousin of my masons. it is possible that ella is the distant cousin as well.

Now, i’ve done the dna testing thing, both at 23&me and FTDNA(and ancestry), so i have relationships via shared segments of chromosomes to lots of people. I’ve plotted, at last count, 58 of these folks and tried to find our shared lineages. Fortunately my grandparents came from very different places: from Sweden, from Ireland, from colonial times in VA, or MD or from Hesse-Germany. So oftentimes i can tell where a connection might be made, my Masons are all Irish and no other lineages trace back to Ireland, just the Masons and a one of their spouses.

So when i find 3 Kelly-Irish dna connections i know they are related somehow to my Philadelphia Masons. Now, 2 of 3 of dna Kellys trace right back to these Kellys from Tuam tying into Ella Kelly’s grandparents and one traces back to Co. Galway, nearby(just on the other side of the loch). So what i need to do is test a descendant of John Joseph Mason and Ella Kelly to see if i’m their distant cousin. I found one, still living in Philadelphia, i hope he responses to my email. yes he did-found via twitter. waiting to see if he accepts my offer of a kit. yes-13 sep 2012, mailing my next ancestry kit to him today. reported kit lost 2/1/2013. replacement coming.

next dna step, review top 100 dna matches for irish ancestors.

-=-=-=-=-

Ella J Kelly father is:

Michael kelly

Birth 11 Dec 1842 in Aghlorah, Tuam, Co Galway, Ireland

Death 1930 in Cloonfush, Tuam, Galway, Ireland

michaelkelly

the story of cloonfushpa’s trip to ireland is at:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/14933880/photo/21401678-cc2c-4ba4-aec2-f80d8eb84634

ella kelly pdf pedigree

one of the most heart felt tributes to ancestors i’ve seen.

dna matches:

  • the first match is with JM, it is necessarily through his mother’s side ADKM, because i match her on same segments, her lineage which is very recent Irish.

The earliest ancestors he has is patrick kelly, b.1835 galway & margaret conneely b.1846 they are from Oughterard, on the shore of Lough Corrib in Co. Galway. just across the lough from tuam. right place & right time. the problem is that the paper trail runs out before a mason-kelly connection.

  • the second dna match is JD Kelly, he appears to be a 2nd cousin to ADKM
  • the 3rd is HB, at this point i have inadequate data to place his ancestors for sure. i need to review this

i found another group of kellys living near the masons in the census

jerome kelly

—>work here next.  maybe find a descendant of this kennedy-kelly group
now i need to find a known mason male to get tested. there is only 1- who i found on the 5th of july because of the unusual spelling of his wife’s name. so i have the 2 people i need. but haven’t established contact with this mason line, wrote via fb. i’m in contact with immediate family but not him. there are 2 sons that can do the testing as well. no response to repeated requests.
i have another potential mason dna match, this time from andrews test.
leads to ann mason
this genetic connection is a mystery. 3-5th cousin. put on back burner.
at this time i need a descendant of john joseph and ella mason to get tested.
i’m not going to get a y chromosome mason. autosomal this close ought to be enough. problem will be separating mason and kelly potentially.
